When we have successfully mapped the current process the next step is to identify and remove 'waste' from the process.
Waste is defined as:
"Any human activity which absorbs resources but creates no value"
Examples of waste are things such as mistakes which require rectification, the over-production of anything "just in case" that eventually no-one will use, processing steps that aren't actually needed, unnecessary movement of staff and transport of items from one place to another without any purpose, groups of people in a downstream activity waiting for an upstream activity to deliver, and goods and services that don't meet the needs of the patient. There are undoubtedly more examples.
Even the most casual observation of what gets done in an average day in the average department shows that waste is everywhere and that there is more of it around than we ever imagined. When we identify and remove waste from the process we speed things up, we reduce costs, and we improve quality.
